Come See Me Play Saxophone at Daniel Ho's Concert! 🎷

Come See Me Play Saxophone at Daniel Ho's Concert! 🎷

As you may or may not know, I started my musical journey on the saxophone.

I was 10 years old when I first started playing saxophone in my elementary school band. In middle school, I joined the worship team at my church and started performing weekly on Sundays. I played saxophone almost every day from age 10 until I was 21 years old.

And then… life shifted.

After graduating from university, I suddenly stopped playing. At first, I told myself I was taking a well-deserved break. College had kind of burned me out. I was exhausted, and I wanted a break.

Every year that passed, I felt regret growing inside me. I told myself I would pick up a saxophone again one day, and whenever I did pull it out of the case to play a song or two, I’d put it back and wouldn’t play again for months (sometimes years).

Then my YouTube channel started growing with an instrument that still feels foreign to me. I love the ukulele, but I don’t feel like it’s my native instrument, you know? It feels like I’m an immigrant to the string family of instruments.

Last year, I decided it was time to go back to my native roots. I bought a saxophone.

I made a commitment to myself to return to the saxophone. And if you know anything about saxophones, you know they are expensive instruments, so buying one again was a HUGE commitment.

While organizing my closet a few months ago, I had this inner voice (maybe a prayer?) asking for the opportunity to play saxophone again.

Then an opportunity came in a way I didn’t expect… Dani Joy invited me to be an artist at the Reno Uke Fest. She let me know that I would be teaching a few workshops and performing a 30-minute set. I do not have the repertoire (or ability) to perform a solo set on ukulele, but on saxophone? You bet! So I started practicing daily, using a ukulele on a looper pedal and playing the melodies on saxophone on top.

Man, did that performance feel good! The other artists at the Reno Uke Fest even asked me to play sax with them during their sets. This felt good. It felt right.

Fast forward to this year…

Ohana Ukuleles invited me to play a set at their booth at the NAMM Show, and I did! I played the ukulele on a looper pedal and saxophone on top.

Two days later, Pepe Romero Jr. invited me to play a short set at his Open House event. There, I had my friends Nolan and Yoshi play ukulele while I played melody on saxophone. Daniel Ho was one of the artists at the Romero Creations Open House.

A few weeks later, Daniel Ho came to my event, Strum in the Desert, where we played together some more. I played sax, and he played percussion! It was pretty fun to think that we both met through the ukulele, yet had fun jamming along on different instruments.

Now Daniel Ho, a 6-time Grammy Award winner, has asked me to play saxophone at his upcoming concert.

Isn’t that wild?!

It would mean the world to me if you came! Here are the details:
